Propylene oxide, also known as epoxide propylene, methyl oxirane, or 1,2-epoxypropane, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C3H6O. It serves as a crucial raw material for organic compounds and ranks as the third most important propylene derivative after polypropylene and acrylonitrile.
Propylene oxide appears as a colorless ethereal-smelling liquid with low boiling point and flammability. It is chiral, and industrial-grade products are typically racemic mixtures of the two enantiomers. The compound exhibits partial miscibility with water, and full miscibility with ethanol and ether. It forms binary azeotropic mixtures with pentane, pentene, cyclopentane, cyclopentene, and dichloromethane.
APPLICATION:
Propylene oxide is used for the preparation of non-ionic surfactants and propylene alcohol, propylene glycol, isopropanol amine, propionaldehyde, synthetic glycerol, organic acids, synthetic resins, foams, plasticizers, emulsifiers, wetting agents, detergents, fungicides, fumigants, etc. Propylene oxide derived fine chemicals are used in almost all industrial sectors and in daily life. Important petrochemical raw materials, mainly used in the production of propylene glycol, polyether POLyol, polypropylene glycol, propylene glycol ether, synthetic glycerol, surfactant, foaming agent, demulsifier and mineral processing agents, etc., also used in the manufacture of isopropanol amine, propylene carbonate, etc.
