  Propylene oxide, also known as propylene oxide, methyl ethylene oxide and 1,2-propylene oxide, with the chemical formula of C3H6O, is a very important raw material of organic compounds and the third largest propylene derivative after polypropylene and acrylonitrile. Propylene oxide is a colorless ether flavored liquid with low boiling point, flammability and chirality. Industrial products are generally racemic mixtures of two enantiomers. It is partially miscible with water and miscible with ethanol and ether. It forms Binary Azeotropic Mixture with pentane, pentene, cyclopentane, cyclopentene and dichloromethane. Toxic, irritating to mucous membrane and skin, can damage cornea and conjunctiva, cause respiratory system pain, skin burn and swelling, and even tissue necrosis.

Applications

1. Propylene Oxide is used as wetting agent, emulsifier, fungicide, plasticizer, descaling agent and surfactant;
2. Used for the preparation of propylene glycol, propanaldehyde, isopropanolamine, synthetic glycerol, organic acid ester, etc.
3. Used for manufacturing polyurethane foam plastics and polyethers.
4. Important raw materials of organic synthesis, used for the manufacture of propylene glycol, propylene alcohol, propanal, synthetic glycerol, organic acid, synthetic resin, foam, plasticizer, surfactant, emulsifier, wetting agent, detergent, fungicide, fumigant, etc.
5. It can be used as solvent of cellulose acetate, cellulose nitrate and resin.
6. Propylene oxide reacts with ammonia to produce isopropyl alcohol amine (monoisopropyl alcohol amine, double isopropyl alcohol amine, triisopropyl alcohol amine), isopropyl alcohol amine is alkaline, can absorb acid gas, widely used in gas purification, such as desulfurization and carbon dioxide removal in synthetic ammonia industry.
