Industry
(1) Acetic acid is a bulk chemical product and one of the most important organic acids. It is primarily used to produce acetic anhydride, acetate esters, and cellulose acetate. Polyvinyl acetate can be processed into films and adhesives and also serves as a raw material for vinylon synthetic fibers. Cellulose acetate is used to manufacture rayon and photographic film.
(2) Acetate esters formed from lower alcohols are excellent solvents, widely used in the paint industry. Since acetic acid dissolves most organic compounds, it is also a common organic solvent (e.g., in the oxidation of p-xylene to produce terephthalic acid).
(3) Acetic acid is used in certain pickling and polishing solutions, as a buffer in weakly acidic solutions (e.g., zinc plating, electroless nickel plating), as an additive in semi-bright nickel plating electrolytes, and to enhance the adhesion of passivation films in zinc and cadmium passivation solutions. It is frequently employed to adjust the pH of weakly acidic plating baths.
(4) Acetic acid is used to produce acetate salts, such as manganese, sodium, lead, aluminum, zinc, and cobalt salts, which are widely utilized as catalysts and auxiliaries in textile dyeing and leather tanning. Lead acetate is a component of lead white paint pigments, while lead tetraacetate serves as a reagent in organic synthesis (e.g., as a strong oxidizer, a source of acetyloxy groups, and for preparing organolead compounds).
(5) Acetic acid is also used as an analytical reagent and in the synthesis of organic compounds, pigments, and pharmaceuticals.
Food
In the food industry, acetic acid acts as an acidulant, flavor enhancer, and spice. For synthetic vinegar production, acetic acid is diluted to 4-5% with water and mixed with various flavoring agents to mimic the taste of fermented vinegar, offering a shorter production time and lower cost. As an acidulant, it is used in compound seasonings, vinegar blends, canned goods, jellies, and cheeses, with usage levels adjusted according to production needs. It also serves as a flavor enhancer in aromatic liquors at concentrations of 0.1-0.3 g/kg.
Clinical Applications
The rectum is a common site for various intestinal diseases. Conventional colonoscopy often struggles to detect early-stage cancers and minute lesions, leading to missed or misdiagnosed cases. However, when magnifying endoscopy is used to identify colorectal lesions, spraying a specific concentration of acetic acid on the rectal mucosa induces whitening of the gastric mucosa and enhances the contours of the gastric antrum mucosa. This technique improves diagnostic accuracy for gastric mucosal tumors and intestinal metaplasia.
