Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)  is a sulfur-containing organic compound. At room temperature, it is a colorless, odorless, transparent liquid and a hygroscopic flammable liquid. It has the characteristics of high polarity, high boiling point, good thermal stability, non-protonic and miscible with water. It can dissolve in most organic substances such as ethanol, propanol, benzene and chloroform, and is known as the "universal solvent". It can be used as an organic solvent, reaction medium and intermediate in organic synthesis. It can also be used as a dyeing solvent, desizing agent, dyeing carrier for synthetic fibers, as well as an absorbent for recovering acetylene and sulfur dioxide. It is widely applied in fields such as cell culture, analytical chemistry, agriculture, medicine, petroleum processing, antifreeze, gas separation, synthetic resins, coking by-products, electronics industry and cosmetics.
